The Boston College volleyball team started its season off on the right foot tonight with 3-2 victory on the road against the University of Rhode Island.
The Eagles looked strong in the opening by taking the first game from the Rams by a score of 30-24. BC attacked the ball well from the start. Sophomores Dorota Niemczewska and Morgan Woodcock both looked comfortable on the offensive side. Niemczewska led the team with 12 kills, while Woodcock recorded 11.
BC dropped the second and third games both by a score of 30-25, but the young Eagles would continue to fight back. Captains Verena Rost and Allison Anderson led the Eagle charge and helped steal the fourth game from the Rams 30-25. The Rams had jumped out to an early 13-7 lead, but the Eagles won seven of the next eight points to tie the score at 14-14. The teams battled back and forth, with Rhode Island trailing 24-23 when the Eagles went on a 6-2 run to close the game and force a fifth and deciding game.
Anderson played well on both sides of the court and recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. Rost made 10 kills and assisted on 44 points in the match.
In the fifth game BC fought relentlessly to steal the victory from the Rams. Rhode Island held leads of 8-5 and 11-8, but the Eagles ran off six straight points to take a 14-11 lead. There was no looking back from there for the Eagles, as Anderson finished off the match with one of her 11 kills on the night.
This first game of the season was a good test for the young BC squad. With only four upperclassmen on the team, the Eagles will keep looking to their younger players to step up on the court.
The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways this Friday at the Sea Sun Tournament in Orono, Maine. BC will play the first of its four tournament games against Eastern Illinois at 11:30 a.m.
