BC Track Coach Looks For Olympic Bid

John Mortimer, assistant coach of the Boston College men's and women's track and field and cross country programs, advanced to the Olympic Track and Field Trials 3,000-meter steeplechase finals on Monday.
By virtue of his qualifying time, 8:32.50, Mortimer joins 13 other finalists in the 3,000-meter steeplechase vying for an Olympic bid. The top three finishers in Thursday's steeplechase final at the Olympic Trials, being held in Sacramento, Calif., will join the U.S. Olympic team for the games in Athens.
Mortimer recently completed his third season as an assistant coach at Boston College. He is responsible for coaching the men's and women's 800 to 10,000 meter athletes, as well as the 3,000-meter steeplechase runners. In 2003, Mortimer won the Olympic Development 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2003 Penn Relays and also competed in the 2003 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.
A Londonderry, N.H. native, Mortimer is a 1999 graduate of the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Mortimer was a seven-time All-American and six-time Big Ten Conference track and field and cross country champion. In addition, he was a four-time Academic All-American and Academic-All Big Ten honoree.
Thursday's 3,000-meter steeplechase final is set for an 11:45 p.m. EST start.
