Ice hockey star Ben Eaves was named winner of the 2004 male Eagle of the Year Award while basketball standout Amber Jacobs was named female Eagle of the Year at Boston College's annual All-Sports Banquet Friday evening in Conte Forum. The award is presented to female and male student-athletes who are outstanding citizens, leaders, scholars and athletes and is the highest honor bestowed upon a BC student-athlete.
Eaves (Faribault, MN) led the Boston College hockey team to 104 wins in his four years. The Eagles won three league titles and earned three berths in the NCAA Tournament. Most memorable was the program's capture of the 2001 national championship.
Despite missing 35 games to injury, Eaves still posted numbers that rank him among the elite players ever to don the maroon and gold sweater. He tallied 53 goals and 116 assists for 169 points in 125 career games. He finished his career ranked fifth on the school's career assist list and ranked 13th on its career scoring chart.
Eaves earned conference all-rookie team honors, twice captured All-Conference accolades and twice gained All-America honors. On top of that, he proudly represented the United States at the 2002 World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic.
Jacobs (Clarks Summit, Pa.) helped put the women's basketball team on the national map after hitting back-to-back game-winning shots in consecutive NCAA Tournament games in 2003.
In 2003-04, Jacobs was BC's leading scorer in 11 games, scoring in double figures 25 times. She scored 20 or more points 10 times, leading her team to its first-ever BIG EAST Championship. She is a two-time All-BIG EAST selection and was an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American this past winter.
Jacobs played in 123 career games, starting all but one of those. She is one of five players to have scored her 1,000th career point before her senior season and is fourth on BC's all-time scoring list with 1,544 points. In addition, she is also second in all-time three-pointers made and attempted, as well as fourth in all-time assists with 469.
Jacobs, who recently became BC's second WNBA draftee and its highest selection ever when the Minnesota Lynx drafted her as the 33rd overall selection, was co-captain of this year's team that made its second consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
