Swimming and Diving Team Earns ECAC Title

The Boston College women's swimming and diving team finished first of 29 teams in the 2004 ECAC Championships, held Feb. 27-29 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Three Eagles won their individual events, including freshmen Carolyn Bowman (Cheshire, Conn.), Kim Garcia (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Torey Thelin (Darien, Conn.).
On the first day, the Eagles accumulated 60 points in the 200-yard IM event. Won by Bowman with a time of 2:08.00, teammates Lauren Keibler (Prospect, Ky.) and Torey Thelin finished third (2:08.81) and fourth (2:08.89), respectively, while sophomore Nikoll Julien (Cardiff, Calif.) touched the wall first in the consolation heat, clocking 2:12.21.
The last event of Feb. 27, the 400-medley relay, produced not only an Eagle school record but a new ECAC standard of 3:50.46. Juliet Paradine (Garden City, N.Y.) led off with a 59.03 effort in the 100-yard backstroke leg, followed by Carolyn Bowman, who swam 1:04.10 in the breaststroke. Thelin then swam 55.05 in the butterfly, capped off by Caitlin Healey?s (Needham, Mass.) 52.28 swim in the 100-yard free.
Marist College cut BC's advantage to 201-170 after the one-meter diving action on the second day. But BC kept driving, taking second in the 200 medley relay behind the quartet of Juliet Paradine, Carolyn Bowman, Torey Thelin and Holly Boucher.
On the final day, BC's 400-yard freestyle relay contingent of Healey, Bowman, Thelin and Megan Hurd held off UNH when the two teams finished one-two at 3:31.41 to 3:31.83.
Sophomore Torey Thelin won the 100-yard butterfly event, re-adjusting the school record for the third time in eight days, with her mark of 55.68, earning one of the team's outstanding performance awards, on the second day. She outtouched teammate Lauren Keibler to place fourth in the 200 fly (2:06.04).
Carolyn Bowman, who earned the squad?s Outstanding Performer distinction, bettered one of the program?s oldest records (Tara McKenna, ?87) by swimming 1:04.77 in the 100-yard breaststroke for third place. She was followed in that race by fellow Eagles Nikoll Julien, who placed sixth (1:07.06), and Holly Boucher and Michelle Lane (Kentwood, Mich.), who finished 10th (1:07.78) and 12th (1:07.87), respectively.
Bowman led a quartet of Eagles to gain points in the 200-yard breaststroke. Bowman was fourth (2:22.84). In the consolation heat, Julien, Boucher, and Lane placed ninth, 12th, and 15th.
Freshman Kim Garcia?s personal best time of 17:17.96 in the 1650-yard (mile) swim merited her gold on the final day of competition.
Freshman Juliet Paradine was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (59:07) on Feb. 28 and swam the program's second-best 200-yard back effort of 2:06.28 for fourth.
Sophomore Heather Page (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) finished 14th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.62 on the second day of action and was 13th the next day in the 200 back (2:11.28).
Senior Lauren Keibler entered into a swim-off (58.40) to win a place in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly for seventh on Feb. 28, and on the final day of action, she was fifth in the 200 fly (2:08.58).
Junior Keri Rubeis (Syracuse, N.Y.) grabbed eighth place with a score of 319.60 on the three-meter board, Feb. 27, and 10th in the one-meter competition the following day.
Senior Caitlin Healey (Needham, Mass.) qualified as the Eagles' best finisher in the 500-yard freestyle; her time of 5:07.51 landed fifth. Healey was one of two Eagles to land in the finals of the 400-yard individual medley, clocking 4:35.57 for fourth. She also was sixth in the 100 free, swimming 53.23.
Sophomore Holly Boucher (Andover, Mass.) topped the Eagle team with her 24.41 effort in the 50-yard freestyle, Feb. 27. Her classmate Katie Martin (Orlando, Fla.) placed 16th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:44.80).
Freshman Megan Hurd (Centreville, Va.) was 12th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24:84 and placed eighth in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking 53.84. Fellow frosh Leigh Going (Olivenhain, Calif.) was sixth in the 400 individual medley (4:39.74), and her time of 17:38.11 landed third in the mile.
