Swimming and Diving Completes First Day at BIG EAST Championships

The Boston College men and women's swimming and diving team completed the first day of competition at the 2004 BIG EAST Championships, held at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y. At night's end the men are 10th of 12 teams and the women are 11th of 12.
Freshman Kim Garcia (Denver, Colo.) swam 5:11.30 in the 500-yard freestyle, taking 31st overall, and her classmate Carolyn Bowman's (Cheshire, Conn.) clocking of 2:10.19 in the 200 IM landed her 29th. Sophomore Liz Byron (Dallas, Pa.) missed matching her season-best time by .02 with her 24.27 effort in the 50 free, placing 26th overall. Diving captain Katelyn Cox (Cheshire, Conn.) was 13th overall on the one meter, scoring four points for the Eagle cause.
In men's individual action, junior Tim Tully (New Rochelle, N.Y.) claimed 27th in the 200-yard IM, swimming 1:55.56.
Both the men's and women's 200 freestyle relay units came in at 11th. The quartet of Torey Thelin (Darien, Conn.), Juliet Paradine (Garden City, N.Y.), Bowman, and Michelle Lane (Kentwood, Mich.) swam 1:40.56. The same four faired better in the women's 400 medley relay with Paradine in back, Lane in butterfly, Bowman in breaststroke and Thelin in free for ninth overall (3:57.85).
Andrew Naumann (Tucson, Ariz.), Matt Northrup (Fayetteville, N.Y.), Andy Faughnan (Aberdeen, N.J.), and Brandon Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) teamed up for their 1:27.72 time in the 200 free relay. The men?s 400 medley relay unit of Naumann, Twichell, Tully and Northrup cruised to the 10th place finish (3:32.80).
Competition continues Friday and Saturday.
