The Boston College women's crew team will row in the 40th Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday. The regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event with more than 7,000 athletes from around the world competing in 24 different races. More than 300,000 spectators are expected to attend the weekend festivities.
"It's the best fall rowing event in the world," said coach Steve Fiske. "It's nice to have it on our home course. We take a lot of pride in racing well in the regatta."
The Eagles will compete in three events on Sunday - the Youth Fours, Championship Fours and Championship Eights.
The Youth Fours, scheduled for an 8:58 a.m. start, will feature five freshmen for Boston College - Whitney Lomax (coxswain), Patton Hindle (strike-seat), Carolyn Lynch (three-seat), Angelique Hrycko (two-seat) and Angelica Grasso (bow-seat).
BC will send out another boat to compete in the Championship Fours at 2:50 p.m. Sophomores Amanda Bustos (coxswain), Susanna DelloRusso (strike-seat) and Trisha Mack (three-seat), senior Amy Boyle (two-seat) and junior Sarah Burns (bow-seat) will represent the Eagles.
In the regatta's final race, BC will send its varsity eight to compete in the Championship Eights event at 3:25 p.m.
Kate Donovan (coxswain), Karen Hill (strike-seat), Tess Casey (seven-seat), Bridget Regan (six-seat), Claire Arpin (five-seat), Colleen Hughes (four-seat), Kendall Hoekstra (three-seat), Elizabeth Millar (two-seat) and Laura Bustos (bow-seat) will finish the regatta for the Eagles.
Fiske is anticipating big things from all three boats.
"I expect to have competitive racing from all of our boats," Fiske said. "We're looking to improve on last year's performances."
Last year's Boston College youth four finished sixth out of more than 30 crews. The varsity eight finished in the top quarter of the field in the Championship Eights event.
The Eagles are also eager to get up close and personal with the Boston University and Clemson University crews that will be around them during the regatta.
"We're starting around crews that we want to compete with this season," Fiske said. "Both Clemson and BU are good programs and we want to show we belong with them on Sunday."
