Women's Swimming and Diving Topples UMass-Amherst, 199-101

The Boston College women's swimming and diving team (9-1) cruised to a 199-101 victory over UMass-Amherst while the men's squad (7-2) slipped to the Minutemen, 101-197, Saturday, Jan. 24. in Chestnut Hill.
The women won 14 of 16 events and after placing second in the meet's third (200-yard freestyle) and fourth (100-yard backstroke) events, claimed victories in the remaining 12 events.
Senior Lauren Keibler (Prospect, Ky.) swept both breaststroke events, earning 1:09.34 in the 100 and 2:28.80 in the 200-yard version. She earned the squad's Outstanding Performer of the Meet Award. Freshman Carolyn Bowman (Cheshire, Conn.) touched the pads first in the 200-yard IM (2:12.74) in addition to clocking a 2:10.79 event-winning time in the 200 butterfly.
Katelyn Cox (Cheshire, Conn.) and Jennifer Rhines (Wayland, Mass.) traded places atop the podium in the diving events. Cox' 236.32-point effort on the one-meter board paced the field while Rhines continued the Eagle momentum, dominating the three-meter board, with 246.22 points.
Coach Grodin recognized freshman Leigh Going's (Olivenhain, Calif.)event-winning time of 10:44.18 in the 1000 freestyle as the squad's Outstanding Performance.
In the men's meet, junior Tim Tully (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the squad, garnering first and a pair of seconds, meriting him another Outstanding Performer Award. He won the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.05), out-touching the nearest competitor by 0.46. Tully also placed second in the 200 backstroke (1:54.85) and 200 IM (1:59.26).
Junior Brandon Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.), who was first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.09 for the team's Outstanding Performance Award, finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.42).
Both teams trek up to Maine for a dual meet on Jan. 31. The meet starts at 11 a.m.
