Swimmers Participate in Day One of the BIG EAST Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - In day one at the BIG EAST Championship meet, the Boston College swimming and diving teams fared well. Several athletes set personal and school records at the conference meet.
The morning meet staged preliminary qualifying races. In the 200 freestyle relay, the women's team of Nina Suryoutomo and three freshmen - Holly Boucher, Victoria Thelin and Elizabeth Byron - set a new Boston College record with a time of 1:36.45.
Caitlin Healey improved her conference standings in the 500-freestyle with a BC-best time of 5:03.99.
Lauren Keibler set a personal best in the 200-IM to move her into the top-20 in the conference. Kathleen McCann's performance landed her in ninth place after the morning rounds, and qualified her for the consolation heat in the evening.
The 50-freestyle saw season bests by four swimmers, Suryoutomo, Boucher, Thelin and Byron, of which Byron's 23.53 set a new school record.
On the men's side, Brandon Twichell turned in a personal best, 1:56.69, in the 200 IM.
The Eagles fared well in the evening rounds as well. The women's 200 freestyle relay team broke the BC record they established in the qualifying heats, finishing in eighth place with a 1:36.23. McCann's performance in the consolation heat of the 200-IM left her on top of the field, and gave her a new personal best and BC record at 2:03.02.
Byron finished seventh overall in the 50 freestyle event, while the 400 medley relay squad of McCann, Nikoll Julien, Thelin and Byron placed eighth.
In the three-meter diving competition, Eagles Katelyn Cox and Jennifer Rhines finished ninth and 14th, respectively, in the standings.
After the first day of competition, the Boston College women are in seventh place in the team standings, while the men are in 11th in their field.
