The following is a statement released Tuesday by the Boston College Office of Public Affairs regarding the complaint filed in the Connecticut State Court:
Boston College has reviewed the complaint filed today by the University of Connecticut, the University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers University and West Virginia University in the Connecticut State Court. The allegations made against Boston College and its Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo are unfounded and irresponsible, and some observers suggest that this complaint stems from political agendas and ambitions in the State of Connecticut. In any event, Boston College will vigorously defend itself and its employees against these claims.
Boston College intends its withdrawal from the Big East to be in full compliance with its obligations under the Big East Constitution, which contains provisions for institutions to withdraw from the Conference. However, as late as last week, the Big East administration attempted to amend the withdrawal provisions of the Constitution through an invalid procedure. Boston College filed a declaratory judgment action this morning against the Big East in the Massachusetts Superior Court to seek an impartial determination of its withdrawal obligations.
