Highlighted by an upset in men's soccer and including the football team's 24-16 win over Connecticut, Boston College's sports teams got off to a perfect 8-0 start over the opening weekend of the 2002-03 sports seasons.
On Friday, the BC women's soccer team began the 2002 season in winning fashion, shutting out Massachusetts, 1-0, BC's first win against the Minutewomen in 18 matches. Then on Sunday, the Eagles blanked Holy Cross 5-0.
The women's volleyball team opened its 2002 campaign by winning the College of Charleston Tournament in South Carolina. The Eagles beat host College of Charleston 3-0 to capture the title. En route to the victory, they also defeated Weber State, 3 -2, and Tennessee Tech, 3-0. Senior Rachel Bach was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
The Boston College field hockey team opened the 2002 season with a 4-0 blanking of Colgate Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. And Boston College's men's soccer team withstood a furious St. John's comeback attempt to take a 2-1 season-opening win over the No. 3-ranked Red Storm at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The win marks the first for the Eagles against St. John's in the teams' last 15 meetings, dating back to Oct. 26, 1991.
