CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College senior associate athletic director Ed Carroll has announced his retirement from the Boston College Athletic Department after 42 years of service, effective July 31, 2002.
A 1956 graduate of Boston College with a degree in economics, Carroll returned to his alma mater as assistant athletic director in October 1960. He was selected for the position vacated by Eddie Miller, who had taken over the Eagles' sports information office.
Immediately after completing an outstanding hockey career and earning his degree from the Heights, Carroll entered the U.S. Navy and, upon completion of the Officers' Candidate School in Newport, R.I., was commissioned and served four years on active duty. He began his duties at BC just one month after having been discharged from the Navy, where he was a lieutenant stationed with Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron Twelve.
When Carroll started his professional career at Boston College, the athletic department staff was composed of just three full-time employees -- athletic director Bill Flynn, his secretary Pat Sheehan and Miller -- and two part-time employees -- director of athletic facilities John Curley and faculty moderator of athletics Fr. Joseph Shea, S.J. Now more than 40 years later, the department has grown exponentially.
"With Eddie (Carroll) retiring, we're losing a true icon at Boston College," BC director of athletics Gene DeFilippo said. "The Athletic Department at BC is at the level it's at now in large part because of Bill Flynn and Eddie Carroll."
Carroll served as assistant athletic director from 1960-75. In that position, he supervised the general business of the athletic department and made travel arrangements for the athletic program. In 1975, Flynn promoted Carroll to associate athletic director. He also coached the University's men's golf team from 1960-91.
In 1991, Carroll assumed the duties of senior associate athletic director.
Always active in his field, Carroll served on the executive committee of the College Athletic Business Managers Association from 1986-91. During the 1989-90 academic year, he served as the organization's president and, in 1991, he was honored as the nation's outstanding college athletic business manager.
In 1987, Carroll was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The honor recognized his hockey playing career as well as his professional achievements. Carroll was a three-year lettermen at the Heights. He twice helped the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament's semifinal round, including the 1955-56 team that he captained.
He and his wife Charlotte are the parents of three grown children, all of whom graduated from Boston College -- Eddie ('89), Christine ('90, MEd. '93) and Lisa ('91).
