BATON ROUGE, La. - Freshman Maria Cicero (Elmhurst, Ill.) earned a fifth-place finish in the 10,000-meter run and was named a 2002 All-American at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, on Wednesday evening at Bernie Moore Stadium. The top eight finishers in the final received All-America recognition.
Cicero finished with a time of 34:52.76. Kristin Price from North Carolina State won the race with a time of 34:26.63 and Tara Quinn from South Florida finished second, coming in seven seconds later. Laura O'Neill from Yale (34:39.67), Jodie Hughes from Colorado (34:47.48) and Cicero rounded out the top five.
The freshman qualified for the event with a time of 33:53.86, the 10th fastest time in the country this year. The result, recorded on April 19 at the Mount SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., broke a 16-year old school record in the 10,000-meter event. The NCAA automatic qualifying time for the 10,000-meter run was 34:10.00.
Cicero's national selection marks the second straight year and third time in the last five years that a Boston College track and field athlete has earned All-America honors. Cicero joins Angie Graham in 1998 (1,500 meters) and Shannon Smith in 2001 (3,000 meters) as recent BC All-Americans.
In 2001-02, Cicero also competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championships and the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, earning All-America honors at both meets.
