Track Squads Compete At New England Championships

DEDHAM, Mass. - Members of Boston College's men's and women's track and field teams competed at the New England Outdoor Championships on Friday and Saturday afternoon at Solomon Track, which is Northeastern University's home track. The men's team finished ninth out of 32 team, finishing with a score of 29 points, while the women's team placed 15th out of 32 teams, turning in a score of 16. Northeastern was crowned champions on the men's side, while Connecticut took home the women's crown.
On the men's side, junior Vernon Mickle (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and senior Michael McKenzie (Natick, Mass.) earned the Eagles' 15 points due to their first- and fourth-place results, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Mickle won a New England Championship with a time of 1:53.00, while McKenzie turned in a time of 1:54.22.
Junior Shawn Wallace (Wakefield, Mass.) picked up six points for BC, as he placed third in the 1,500-meter run turning in a time of 3:53.90. Junior Brian Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass.) placed fifth in the grueling 3,000-meter steeplechase, as he finished with a time of 9:20.58. Senior Tony Beirne (Lake Forest, Ill.) placed seventh in both the shot put and the discus throw. In the shot put, he finished with a mark of 48'06.25", while in the discus, he finished with a mark of 151'03.00".
On the women's side, senior Katie Ryan (Elmira, N.Y.) placed third out of 30 participants in the 1,500-meter run. Ryan finished the race with a time of 4:31.86, which was only five seconds behind winner Amy DeCamp of New Hampshire.
Sophomore Jennifer Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y.) earned five points for the Eagles, as she finished fourth out of 32 runners in the 5,000-meter run. Kramer finished the grueling race with a time of 17:28.37. Freshman Megan Mara (Avon, Conn.) picked up one point for the Eagles, as she finished eighth in the pole vault competition. Mara finished with a jump of 11'00.25". Junior Megan Kearney (North Canton, Conn.) was the final scorer for Boston College, as she placed fifth, which was good enough for four points, in the discus throw with a solid toss of 145'10.00".
