CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Brian Macchi (Milford, Mass.) and Katie Ryan (Elmira, N.Y.) were named the recipients of the 2001-02 Nathaniel J. Hasenfus Eagle of the Year Awards on Wednesday evening at Boston College's annual All-Sports Banquet.
The Eagle of the Year Awards are given annually to one male and one female student-athlete who is an outstanding citizen, leader, scholar and athlete. It is the most prestigious honor that the athletic department bestows upon a student-athlete.
While Macchi and Ryan's collegiate careers are not yet finished, they both have achieved a great deal of success in their four years.
Macchi currently ranks second on the school's career RBI list, having driven in 127 runs. He now stands in third place on the Eagles' career home run list with 26. For Macchi, 17 of his 26 home runs came during the 2001 season. Last spring, his outstanding play earned him All-New England first team recognition and All-BIG EAST second team honors. He also gained a spot on the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region first team. Macchi and the rest of his 2002 teammates are currently in first place in the BIG EAST Conference and are possibly headed to the conference tournament for the second time in the last three years.
He is a four-time winner of the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement and a three-time member of the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team. Macchi is an elementary education major in Boston College's Lynch School of Education.
Ryan, who is a tri-captain on this year's track and field team, began her collegiate career with a bang, as she ran to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA District I Qualifier. Gaining a berth to the NCAA Championship, she was the eighth freshman to cross the finish line, completing the course in 72nd place.
After her junior season, Ryan earned All-America honors following her 24th-place finish at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championship. In that meet, the Eagles finished fourth overall. A year later, she finished in 39th place, helping the Eagles to a sixth-place finish at the 2001 NCAA Championship.
Her other accomplishments include a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the 2001 ECAC Championships and subsequent 11th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championship. She ran a leg of the 2001 BIG EAST Champion distance medley team and placed seventh in the 2000 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship.
She is a four-time winner of the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement and was named BC's Outstanding Junior Female Athlete at last year's banquet. Ryan is an information systems and mathematics major in Boston College's Carroll School of Management.
Macchi and Ryan are Boston College's two recipients of the prestigious Aeropostale/BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award.
