Women's Rowing Wins At Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J.-The Boston College women's rowing team had a strong showing at the annual Knecht Cup on Saturday and Sunday. The event, which was hosted by Villanova University, was a two-day affair with 57 schools participating. The Eagles' first Varsity Eight boat placed first in both finals that they competed in and the second Novice Eight boat was equally impressive, winning in their two finals.
The Varsity Eight rowed a terrific race in the final on Saturday, finishing with a time of 6:54.3, tops in the field of 20 schools. The Eagles were followed by Kansas, UMass, the second and third place teams, respectively. Lehigh came in fourth, with Wisconsin rounding out the top five.
The second Varsity Eight finished in sixth position, with a time of 7:24.1. Kansas finished in the top spot out of 18 boats. The first Novice Eight boat finished fifth in their final on the first day, with a time of 7:29.4. The rowers competed well, but could not catch the leaders, headed by Kansas again.
The second Novice Eight rowed a quality race, taking the first place honors in its final with a time of 7:39.0. The Eagles finished ahead of UMass (second place), Villanova (third) and West Virginia (fourth).
The Varsity Four boat competed well in their qualifying heat, finishing in third position with a time of 8:29.0, but did not qualify for the final on the first day.
On Sunday, the Varsity finished with an almost identical time and result from Saturday. The Eagles rowed in at 6:54.2, taking first place, defeating UMass (second), Kansas (third) and Villanova (fourth). The second Varsity Eight improved upon their position from the first day, finishing in third position with a time of 7:25.3. Kansas finished in first place and UMass ended up just ahead of the Eagles.
The first Novice Eight finished in third place in their final race, with a time 7:37.0. BC finished behind UMass and Villanova and ahead of Connecticut. The second Novice Eight boat swept the weekend, finishing in the top position in its final race, with a time of 7:48.0. North Carolina and UMass rounded out the top three.
The Varsity Four boat finished third out of six boats in the final event on Sunday.
The Eagles will return to action on April 21 against New Hampshire and Rhode Island at the Charles River in Boston, Mass.
