Men's Track And Field Places Third At URI Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Boston College men's track and field team placed third, out of eight teams, at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday at the Mackal Field House. The Eagles finished with a total score of 73, which was only behind runner-up finisher Rhode Island (157 points) and invitational champion Brown (174 points).
Junior Vernon Mickle (Bayshore, N.Y.) led the Eagles with a first-place performance in the 800-meter run. Mickle finished with a time of 1:56.39, just edging out Scott MacDonald of Brown, who finished with a time of 1:56.39 in the 22 participant competition.
Senior tri-captain Mike McKenzie (Natick, Mass.) and juniors Gabe Verdaguer (Newton, Mass.) and Brian Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass.) all turned in runner-up finishes for Boston College.
McKenzie turned in time of 2:25.69 in the 29 participant 1,000-meter run. McKenzie finished just two seconds behind Brown Enda Johnson, who finished with a time of 2:25.22. Verdaguer had a strong showing in the long jump competition as he finished second with a mark o f 21'05.25". Mahoney was just edged out in the 3,000-meter run as he finished second with a time of 8:30.88, while winner Jeff Gaudette of Brown finished with a time of 8:30.86.
Sophomore Byron Gartrell (Boston, Mass.) finished third in the 3,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 8:40.86. Freshman Geoff Atkins (Avon, Conn.) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 400- and 200-meter dashes. He finished the 400 with a time of 50.12 and the 200 with a time of 22.96. Senior tri-captain Tony Bierne (Lake Forest, Ill.) placed third in the shot put and fourth in the 35 lbs. weight throw. He finished with a mark of 47'11.75" in the shot put and a mark of 52'06.00 in the weight throw.
The men's track and field team is back in action at 12 p.m. Saturday, February 9, when it takes on Vermont and New Hampshire in a tri-meet in Durham, N.H.
