PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Members of the Boston College men's and women's swimming teams competed in the day one preliminary round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Junior Matthew Baker (Lakewood, Wash.) and freshman Caitlin Healey (Needham, Mass.) both qualified for tonight's consolation round in their respective event. Baker just missed out on making the finals of the 50-yard freestyle, as he finished 11th with a time of 21.58. His time in the preliminary round was 35 one-hundredths of a second faster than his previous-best time this season. For Healey, while she did not swim a season-best time in the 500-yard freestyle, she still placed 11th with a time of 5:07.12. Her time was less than one second from qualifying for the finals.
Other Boston College women's swimmers participating in this morning's preliminary rounds were freshmen Lisa DelSignore (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Caitlin Leahy (Bronxsville, N.Y.) and junior Lauren Ohtake (Honolulu, Hawaii), who all competed with Healey in the 500. DelSignore placed 24th, Ohtake finished 28th and Leahy completed the race in 41st. The three turned in time of 5:14.66, 5:15.86 and 5:23.72, respectively. Sophomore Caitlin Klick (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.07, which was good enough for 24th place and a season-best time.
On the men's side, freshman David Herman (San Anselmo, Calif.) just missed out on a season-best time in the 500-yard freestyle, as he placed 35th, Thursday morning, with a time of 4:56.89. His previous best time was 4:50.37. Freshman Andrew Naumann (Tucson, Ariz.) had a solid swim in the 200-yard individual medley, as he just missed out on tonight's consolation round with an 18th-place finish turning in a time of 1:59.14.
In the relay events this morning, the top relay for both the men's and women's teams came in the 400-yard medley. The team of Naumann, Baker, freshman Brandon Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and junior Matthias Schildwachter (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) placed 10th with a time of 3:35.88. The women's relay team of Ohtake, Healey, Klick and freshman Erin Fransen (Eden Prarie, Minn.) also placed 10th, finishing with a time of 4:02.67.
