UNIONDALE, N.J. - The Boston College women's swimming team, which stands in ninth place following the first day of the BIG EAST Championships with 43 points, had six athletes competing in Friday morning's preliminary round. While no swimmers qualified for tonight's finals, several had strong showings in their respective events.
Freshman Kathleen McCann (Walpole, Mass.), who placed 10th in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday evening, just missed qualifying for tonight's consolation round in the 100-yard backstroke. McCann finished the preliminary heat in 19th place, finishing with a time of 58.90. Her time shattered the previous season-best, which was 1:00.24 set by senior Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y.). McCann's previous best time came against Boston University, where she swam a 1:00.43.
Senior Lauren Schwartz (Mount Laurel, N.J.) placed 21st in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 57.96, and sophomore Lauren Keibler (Prospect, Ky.) placed 25th with a time of 58.87. Junior Nicole Duffy (Fairfax, Va.) shattered her season-best time and the team's season best in the 200-yard freestyle. While Duffy only placed 24th, her time of 1:53.63 is three seconds faster then her own season-best time and the team's best time.
Sophomore Michelle Lane (Kentwood, Mich.), senior Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) and Keibler all competed in the 100-yard breaststroke. Lane and Kostopoulos turned in times of 1:06.74 and 1:07.39, both of which broke the team's fastest time this season which was 1:08.68. Keibler turned in a time of 1:10.43.
