Swimmers Compete In Day One Of BIG EAST Championships

UNIONDALE, N.J. - The Boston College swimming team kicked off the 2002 BIG EAST Conference Championships on Thursday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in Uniondale, N.J.
Six women's swimmers competed in Thursday morning's first session. Freshman Kathleen McCann (Walpole, Mass.) was the only swimmer to qualify for any Thursday evening events. McCann will compete in the consolation heat of the 200-yard individual medley. She was the last swimmer to qualify this morning, as she placed 16th with a time of 2:06.15. Her time in the 200 was her fastest of the season and the team's fastest. Her previous best came against Boston University, where she finished with a time of 2:09.81.
Junior Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) just missed out in making the consolation round in the 50-yard freestyle. She finished in a tie for 16th, but in the swim-off to make tonight's session, she finished second which knocked her out of the consolation round. She finished the 50 with a time of 24.06, which was her season's fastest time and the fastest time on the team.
Junior Nicole Duffy (Fairfax, Va.) also just missed out on making tonight's consolation round in the 500-yard freestyle. Duffy placed 20th, out of 33 participants, with a time of 5:03.33, which was her fastest time of the season by nine seconds.
Senior Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) placed 30th in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 24.46. Senior Lauren Schwartz (Mount Laurel, N.J.) was the final Eagle swimmer to compete this morning, as she took part in the 200-yard individual medley. She finished in 32nd-place, turning in a time of 2:10.56.
