CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Head track and field coach Randy Thomas has announced the hiring of former Brookline High School head coach Dave Counts as his newest assistant. Counts replaces Dan Lefever, who left in August for the University of Missouri-Columbia to pursue his Ph.D., and will work with the pole vaulters, long jumpers and triple jumpers.
Counts was the head coach at Brookline from 1988-2002, and in that time he led the Warriors to three team state championships. The boys track and field team won the indoor state title in 1997, the same year the girls cross country team was crowned state champs. In 1999 the girls outdoor track and field squad took top honors in the state, an accomplishment for which Counts was named Boston Globe Coach of the Year.
In addition, Counts coached state individual champions in every event, as well as several New England champions. He also mentored the 1997 national scholastic indoor champions in the mile and two-mile runs.
A regular presenter on the pole vault at camps and clinics, including the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association pole vault safety certification clinic since 1995, Counts received his USA Track & Tield Level I certification in 1994 and his Level II certification in the following year.
"Dave brings a wide range of knowledge in multiple event areas," Thomas said. "He's very passionate, especially about the pole vault and field events. He's a great technician and a great people person. He'll be a great asset to the program."
An active marathoner and a participant in several national-level track meets, Counts' recent athletic achievements include a couple of rare feats. He competed in both the pole vault and the mile at the 1999 National Masters Indoor Championships and the pole vault and the steeplechase at the 2000 New England Masters Championships.
When he is not coaching, Counts works as a freelance computer graphics artist. Counts, a resident of Brookline, graduated from Yale in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in history.
