Nine Newcomers Selected For Varsity Club Hall of Fame

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - A total of nine former Boston College student-athletes will be inducted into the Varsity Club Hall of Fame this fall when the group holds its annual dinner on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Westin Hotel in Waltham. The group includes: Bob Bouley (football), Fernando Braz (men's track and field/cross country), Jennifer Lane and Pam Piorkowski (women's tennis), Mike Mayock (football and baseball), Phil Powell (men's basketball), Tim Sweeney (men's ice hockey), Steve Trapilo (football) and Carla (Wenger) Vicidomini (women's basketball). The late Sonny Nictakis, a 1999 BC graduate and former baseball player, will be honored with the Rev. William J. Donlan Special Achievement Award.
Bouley played for the Eagles from 1967-69 as an offensive tackle and earned all-East honors as a senior. He won the Thomas F. Scanlan Award, given to the team's top scholar-athlete, as a senior and was an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner in 1970. He later earned a law degree from Boston College and his father, Gil, is a former BC student-athlete and assistant football coach. Gil is a 1980 Varsity Club Hall of Fame inductee and the duo will become the first father-and-son to earn membership in the group.
Braz competed for Boston College from 1981-85 and led the men's cross country team to a tied for 11th-place at the '84 NCAA Championship. He also qualified for the NCAA event as an individual in both 1981 and 1982. He was a two-time BIG EAST Champion (indoor 5,000 meters in 1982 and outdoor 5,000 meters in 1982) and two-time New England champion (outdoor 10,000 meters in 1981 and indoor 5,000 meters in 1982). He participated in the marathon trials for the United States Olympic team twice after graduation - in 1988 and 1992.
Lane and Piorkowski will enter the Hall of Fame as a doubles team. Lane won BIG EAST singles championships in 1989, 1990 and 1991 and doubles championships in 1989 and 1990. Piorkowski won BIG EAST singles titles in all four of her years at BC and in doubles in '90 with Lane. Lane still holds the BIG EAST record for most career No. 1 flight titles. The duo served as co-captains during their senior year and advanced to NCAA play as a doubles team three times. Both of them also qualified for the NCAA singles championships twice each during their careers. Lane won four doubles championships at the Rolex Eastern Regional Championship - three of them with Piorkowski. Piorkowski was named the 1992 Eagle-of-the-Year.
Mayock played football and baseball at BC from 1976-81 and was football team captain as a senior in 1980. He earned third team All-America honors and first team all-East honors. He was named the ECAC defensive player-of-the-year as a senior and won the Thomas F. Scanlan Award. Mayock posted 12 career interceptions, including two against John Elway and Stanford in a 30-13 BC win over the Cardinal in 1980. In baseball, he earned all-New England, all-East and team MVP honors as a senior.
Sweeney played men's ice hockey from 1985-89 and earned All-America honors as a senior, as well as all-New England honors. He remains the 22nd-leading scorer in school history with 152 points and is 11th in goals with 77 and 34th in assists with 75. He led the team in scoring his senior year with 73 points as the team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. As a sophomore, he had 31 goals and 16 assists to lead the team with 47 points.
Powell played men's basketball at BC from 1952-55, serving as team captain in his senior year. He is still the Boston College single-season rebound average leader with 19.0 per game in 1954-55 and is second in single-season rebounds with 495 in '54-'55. His 30 rebounds vs. Brandeis in '54-'55 is second-highest in school single-game history. He played professionally in Europe following his collegiate career.
Trapilo played offensive guard for the football team between 1982 and 1986 and was a team captain in his senior year, as the team had a 9-3 record and beat Georgia in the Hall of Fame Bowl. He earned honorable mention All-America honors and all-East honors as a senior. He was a starting guard on the Cotton Bowl championship team as a sophomore in 1984, the only underclassmen to start on the line. He won the Eagle-of-the-Year Award as a senior.
Wenger played women's basketball at BC from 1986-91 and remains the fifth all-time leading scorer in the program's history with 1,243 points. She is also fourth in rebounds with 643, fifth in field goals made with 502 and fourth in free throw attempts (385) and games played (112). She earned second team all-BIG EAST honors in her junior and senior years and was the BIG EAST women's basketball scholar-athlete of the year after her senior year.
Nictakis lost a seven-and-a-half year battle with Hodgkin's Disease last August. He was a two-time captain of the baseball team and received the team's Leadership Award in 1997 and the 1998 Jeff Keith Athletic Leadership Award. He served as the president of the BC Student-Athlete Advisory Board.
