CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - An appearance by the Boston College men's soccer team in the NCAA Championship propelled Boston College to continue to be ranked in the top 25 for the Sears Directors' Cup.
Boston College, which won the BIG EAST men's soccer tournament and lost to Rhode Island in the first round of the NCAAs, is currently ranked No. 24 in the country in those standings.
The University of North Carolina, the inaugural winner (1993-94) and Stanford University, winners from 1995 through 2000, of the Division I Sears Directors' Cup, presented by the nation's athletics directors, hold the top two spots in the 2000-01 race.
The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
These standings are based upon the completion of women and men's cross country, field hockey, I-AA football, women's and men's soccer, women's volleyball and water polo. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.
In the first set of standings for the fall, Boston College received credit for its fourth-place finish at the NCAA women's cross country championship.
