Women's basketball standout Cal Bouchard and hockey star Mike Mottau have been named winners of the Nathaniel J. Hasenfus "Eagle of the Year Award," Boston College's highest athletic honor.
The Hasenfus Awards - each a bronze eagle on an inscribed mahogany base - were presented at the Boston College Varsity Club's annual awards dinner. They are given each year to the outstanding male and female athletes in the graduating class. The prestigious awards are named in honor of Dr. Nathaniel J. Hasenfus, the late and beloved historian of Boston College athletics.
Bouchard, a two-time All-BIG EAST first team selection, capped a fine four-year career this past season by leading the Eagles to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Bouchard, who became the first BC women's basketball player to be drafted by the WNBA when she was taken by the Detroit Shock in the draft last week, finished her collegiate career as the fourth all-time leading scorer in BC history - with 1,496 points. This past season, she led the BIG EAST in three-point field goals made per game, earning her a spot in the annual College Three-Point Basketball Championship at the NCAA Men's Final Four. Bouchard also competed in the WBCA All-Star Basketball Game at the NCAA Women's Final Four.
Bouchard also excelled in the classroom. She earned the 1999-2000 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete award, and was a Rhodes Scholar candidate. A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, the senior was named to the Dean's List seven semesters.
Mottau (Avon, Mass.) is not only the top male athlete at Boston College, but also the very best in the nation at his sport. The senior defenseman captured the 2000 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the country's most outstanding hockey player. He also captured All-America honors for the second consecutive year. Just as importantly, the captain played a major role in the Eagles' recent success. Boston College has advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Frozen Four in each of the past three seasons, including two appearances in the national title game.
Mottau completed his career as Boston College's career assist leader and its top-scoring defenseman of all time. Further, the senior established HOCKEY EAST marks for assists and points by a defenseman.
Mottau is now playing with the U.S. National Team at the World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia.
