Women's Swimming And Diving Team Wins ECAC's

GLOUCESTER, N.J. - - After a seven-point deficit in day two, Boston College went on to win the women's ECAC swimming and diving championships held Feb. 24-26 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in New Jersey with 513 points. Maryland-Baltimore County finished second to the Eagles, - out of 29 teams - totaling 426.50 points. The men's team was 10th in the 36-team field. Maryland-Baltimore County pulled out the win in that competition, tallying 599 points.
The Eagles' Shannon Lents (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished second in the one-meter diving competition, totaling 383.75 points. Teammate Kristen Gray (West Boylston, Mass.) was fourth at 375.70 points. The duo went 5-6 in the three-meter event with Lents' 402.35 and Gray's 391.05 points.
BC featured two swimmers in the 200-yard backstroke finals. Sophomore Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y.) swam 2:05.93 for third overall while Melissa Pierce (The Woodlands, Texas) was fifth after a 2:07.65 effort.
Three BC freshmen participated in the 100 freestyle's evening swim. Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) placed second with a time of 52.42. Caitlin Klick (Chelmsford, Mass.) won the consolation heat (53.65), ninth overall, and Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) finished 14th (54.32).
Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) placed third in the 200 fly (2:06.57), followed by Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who was eighth overall with a time of 2:07.98.
In the 1650-yard freestyle, senior Kara Glynn (Branford, Conn.) swam 17:43.48 in the final mile race of her career along with fellow senior Joanna Myer (Leominster, Mass.), who finished 16th (18:09.82). Sophomore Sarah Dreyer (Indianapolis, Ind.) was 14th, clocking 18:02.25.
Sophomore Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) swam 2:26.14 for 11th in the 200 breaststroke.
The 400 freestyle relay of Kostopoulos, Pierce, Duffy and Suryoutomo won the 400 freestyle relay, swimming 3:32.94.
In the men's competition, Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.) won the 200-yard breaststroke consolation heat, swimming 2:08.17. Teammate Brian O'Neill (Reno, Nev.) was 11th with his time of 2:09.90.
The men's 400 freestyle relay contingent of Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.), Fletcher Evans (Mercer Island, Wash.), Colin Feichtmeir (Mountain View, Calif.) and Russ Keil (Tiburon, Calif.) finished eighth (3:15.56).
Junior diver Mike Wilt (Columbia, Conn.) finished 11th on the one-meter (369.25) and 12th on the three-meter (363.45) boards.
