Swimming And Diving Finishes Second Day Of ECAC's

GLOUCESTER, N.J. - Sophomore Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) set a school record in the 100 butterfly as Boston College participated in day two of the ECAC swimming and diving championships at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in New Jersey. The women are 7.5 points short of first-place Maryland-Baltimore County with the Eagles 306 points, while the men are tied for 11th with 82 points. Competition resumes Saturday Feb. 26.
Schwartz swam 57.39 to break Holly Bickle's six-year school mark of 57.65 and finish second overall. The sophomore was also a member of BC's silver medal, 200 medley relay. She was joined by Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y.), Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) and Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.), who finished at 1:48.88, just .02 behind crosstown rival Boston University.
Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 400 individual medley, swimming 4:37.09. Teammate Erica Allen (Los Gatos, Calif.) was 14th (4:43.24) in the same event.
Three Eagle freshmen placed in the 200 freestyle. Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) was BC's lone finalist, finishing 4th with a time of 1:54.47. In the consolation heat, Melissa Pierce (The Woodlands, Texas) swam 1:56.29 for 12th while Caitlin Klick (Chelmsford, Mass.) was 16th (1:58.30).
Kostopoulos concluded the 100 breaststroke race 9th (1:07.07). BC went 3-4 in the 100 backstroke. Suryoutomo clocked 58.57, and Brianne Sullivan swam 59.24. Melissa Pierce finished 11th overall at 1:00.12.
The 800 freestyle relay concluded day two of competition. Christa Ehlers led off with 1:56.01 in her 200-yard leg, followed by Nicole Duffy (1:56.39), Melissa Pierce (1:56.46) and Caitlin Klick (1:56.93). BC placed second in that event (7:45.79).
In the men's competition, the Eagle 200 medley relay contingent of Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.), Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.), Russ Keil (Tiburon, Calif.) and Matthias Schildwachter (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished 11th overall with a time of 1:37.85.
Senior Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.) swam the last 400 individual medley of his career, turning in a season best performance of 4:14.90 for 13th.
Ken Barton became BC's first ECAC finalist since 1995 as he grabbed 8th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.91, a personal best. Brian O'Neill (Reno, Nev.) was 14th overall (1:00.57).
The evening ended with the 800 freestyle relay. Fletcher Evans, Matt Baker, Greg Dwyer and Matthias Schildwachter (1:49.11) gave BC a final time 7:10.30 for 10th.
