Swimming And Diving Completes First Day Of ECAC's

GLOUCESTER, N.J. - Boston College competed in the ECAC swimming and diving championships Thursday in the Gloucester County Institute of Technology. Competition continues through Saturday (Feb. 26).
The Eagles captured the first event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) gave BC a lead with her 24.52 split. Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) and Caitlin Klick (Chelmsford, Mass.) extended the lead, and senior captain Kendra Johnson (Weston, Conn.) anchored with a split of 24.89. Johnson was also a member of the winning ECAC 200 free relay as a freshman.
In diving, Shannon Lents (Boca Raton, Fla.) placed 5th with a score of 402.35, and Kristen Gray (West Boylston, Mass.) was 6th with 391.05 points. Karrin Hoesing (Omaha, Neb.) totaled 289.80 points.
Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) placed third overall in the 500 freestyle (5:04.29) after challenging for the lead throughout the race. She was seeded sixth, heading into the finals. In the same event, Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) had a strong swim in the consolations, placing 11th with 5:06.46. Kara Glynn (Branford, Conn.) fell two spots behind in 13th (5:09.65). It was Glynn's third consecutive 5:09, 500-yard freestyle effort in the post season.
Sophomore Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) dropped two seconds from trials as her 2:08.58 in the 200 Individual Medley left her in 10th place.
Nina Suryoutomo finished second overall in the 50 free finals. Her 24.18 effort was highlighted by a great turn and finish. Kostopoulos jumped up five places to win the consolation heat with a time of 24.42.
The 400 medley relay quartet of Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y.), Kostopoulos, Lauren Schwartz and Suryoutomo won the event. The time of 3:54.54 bettered the record set at the 1999 Big East championships by Sullivan, Kostopoulos, Schwartz and Rachel Enos ('99) of 3:54.87.
In the men's competition, BC's squad finished seventh overall. Junior Russ Keil (Tiburon, Calif.) led off with a time of 22.07 in his 50-yard leg, followed by Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.) and captains Colin Feichtmeir (Mountain View, Calif.) and Fletcher Evans (Mercer Island, Wash.), who sealed a time of 1:26.64.
BC's third tri-captain, Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.), placed 16th in the 200 IM (1:58.71). Baker was 14th in the 50 free, clocking 21.68.
The 400 medley relay ended the first night of competition. Dwyer gave BC a lead in its heat with his 55.52 effort in the 100-yard backstroke leg. Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.) was next then freshman Matthias Schildwachter (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added an impressive 52.24 butterfly split. Keil anchored as the unit finished 12th at 3:33.60, the Eagles' second best time of the year.
