CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - An outstanding performance at the NCAA Championship by the Boston College women's cross country team has given the Eagles a tie for 16th place in the first edition of the Sears Directors' Cup standings. The Sears Directors' Cup is presented each spring by the nation's athletics directors to the school with the most successful all-around athletic program. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
The Eagles' cross country team won the BIG EAST Championship and finished in fourth-place at the NCAAs. The fourth-place finish at the nationals was the highest for any Boston College female athletic team in NCAA play.
Six-time Sears Directors' Cup champion Stanford holds second place with 175 points. Rounding out the top five are Arkansas, third with 147 points, North Carolina, fourth with 140 points, and Providence, fifth with 139 points.
These standings are based upon the completion of women and men's cross country and field hockey. Winning the national championship in men's cross country was Arkansas, and in field hockey, Old Dominion. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.
The next set of standings for the award will include NCAA men's soccer and Boston College will receive additional points. The Boston College men's soccer team won the BIG EAST Conference tournament and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, before losing to Rhode Island in the first round.
