Boston College Graduation Numbers Among The Best

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - As Boston College enjoys one of its finest fall seasons in its athletic history, the release of the NCAA Graduation Rates last Monday indicates that the school's student-athletes are also among the nation's best in the classroom.
According to the NCAA report, the overall graduation rate of the school's athletes is fifth among all Division I-A programs and the rate for the football program is tied as the fifth best.
The 2000 NCAA Graduation Rates Report, the 10th such survey issued by the association, covers students who enrolled between 1990 and 1993 at 321 Division I schools, including 114 in Division I-A. The NCAA bases graduation rates on the raw percentage of student-athletes who entered an institution and graduated within six years. Students who leave or transfer, regardless of academic standing, are considered nongraduates.
Using the NCAA formula, Boston College graduated a four-year average of 83 percent of its student-athletes, fifth only to Northwestern (92 percent), Duke (91), Notre Dame (89), and Stanford (89), and ahead of Rice (82), Vanderbilt (80), Southern Methodist (74) and Wake Forest (73). The national average for Division I-A schools is 58 percent.
Boston College football players graduated at a 78 percent rate, the highest in the BIG EAST Conference and tied as the fifth-highest in the country behind Duke (91), Northwestern (88), Stanford (83) and Notre Dame (82). The Eagles are tied with Vanderbilt and ahead of Rice (74), Tulane (73), Baylor (71) and Bowling Green (71).
Boston College graduated 93 percent of all women competing in athletics, tied for third nationally with Duke and Virginia Tech, and 77 percent of all its men competing in athletics - tied as the sixth-best number in the country. Among African-American student-athletes, Boston College is at 73 percent - the seventh-best number.
The Eagles' women's basketball team graduated its players at a perfect 100 percent to tie for first place in the nation with a number of schools, including St. John's of the BIG EAST Conference. The men's basketball team was fifth among the 14 BIG EAST teams at 64 percent.
Boston College is in the middle of one of its finest athletic years ever as the women's cross country team finished fourth at the NCAA Championship and won the BIG EAST title, the men's soccer team played in the NCAA Championship and took the BIG EAST title and the football team has already secured its second-straight winning season. Already in the winter, the men's ice hockey team is 10-3 on the season and ranked third in the country while the women's basketball team is 2-0 and ranked 19th.
