Eagles Topple Crusaders to Close Out First Semester
Coach Barry Parenteau brought the Holy Cross Crusaders to BC for our final meet of 1999. After the BC quartet of Matt Baker, Ken Barton, Matthias Schildwachter and Russ Keil took the 200 medley relay, HC's Mike Emmons held off Matt Baker in an exciting 200 freestyle. Paul Callahan then took the 100 backstroke followed by a Russ MacTough win in the 100 breaststroke. Matthias Schildwachter showed he is good in the fly from the 50 to the 200 as he captured first in the "distance fly" race. He was also the only Eagles able to topple HC's Emmons with this victory. After Colin Feichtmeir won the 50 freestyle (with fellow captain Fletcher Evans in second), Mike Wilt captured the first of his two diving wins. Mike's 267.60 points off the one meter board took first over teammate Steve Hunter. Dave Santacroce flipped over and won the 100 freestyle. He was followed by a great 200 backstroke race by Jonathan Hartigan who dropped five seconds from his race in Maine. BC also took 2-3 with Fletcher Evans and Brian O'Neill doing the honors. Paul Callahan became a surprise double winner in the meet as he captured the 200 breaststroke from lane 8. Jay Pollack added another BC win in the 500 before HC's Emmons struck again touching out three Eagles to take the 100 fly. In second place it was Greg Dwyer followed by Rick Holahan. Mike Wilt's second win was then followed by Matthias Schildwachter's second win as he captured the 100 IM. The meet concluded with the team of Dave Santacroce, Matt Baker, Nick Riolo and Jay Stephens capturing the 200 freestyle relay. The Eagles now head off to exams before they get together again on their training trip in the state of Hawaii. It was a successful semester of swimming as BC has shown good talent and depth. We have good quality in all events and will need it all as we face New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Boston University, Maine and St John's next semester. We have a chance in all five meets but will definitely be the underdog in four of the five. We conclude the year with trips to the Big East and the
