Cynthia Tow Falls In Finals Of Cissie Leary Tennis Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Top-seeded junior Cynthia Tow (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) won four consecutive matches but fell in straight sets to second-seed Kavitha Krishnamurthy of Princeton in the finals of the Third Annual Cissie Leary Tennis Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Sept. 24-26 in Philadelphia. Tow rebounded from the loss to take the consolation doubles title with partner, junior Barbara Privrel (Zurich, Switzerland), 8-4 over the team of Arike and McAuley from Seton Hall University.
Tow had reached the finals by virtue of straight-set victories in her four rounds, losing only 21 games through the tournament. In the finals, Krishnamurthy won the match, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
All the Boston College singles competitors reached at least the third round of play before falling out of the tournament. Privrel reached the fourth round of the tournament before falling to Cynthia Obsitnik of Yale, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Mercedes del Valle (Mexico City, Mexico) advanced to the third round, falling to Beth Kaufaman of Yale 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Kiren Fernando (Lake Oswego, Ore.) made it to the fourth round, but fell to Amanda Hastings-Phillips of Princeton.
The Boston College women?s tennis team will next compete at the Brown Invitational in Providence on Oct. 8-10.
