CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's swimming and diving team closed its 1998-99 season eighth in the BIG EAST conference while the men finished 13th at the championships held Feb. 25-27 in Uniondale, N.Y.
After accumulating a 12-3 dual meet record, the women were eighth in a field of 13 teams with Notre Dame, Villanova and Miami filling in the top-three spots, respectively. Pittsburgh won the men's competition with one point separating the second-and third-place teams: Notre Dame and Syracuse, which each totaled 565 and 564 points, respectively. The Eagles, 7-6 on the year, earned 70 points for 13th.
Newly crowned Eagles portended much success for Boston College's future with their gigantic contribution at the championships. Freshmen Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) and Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) headed up the list of BC scorers. Kostopoulos, who was voted the BC women's most outstanding performer, posted a ninth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.48), 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.67) and 14th in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.08). Butterflier Lauren Schwartz added a ninth and 10th in the 100 (57.74) and 200 (2:05.81) events of that stroke. Both girls were members of the 200 medley and 400 medley relay squads that garnered sixth- and seventh-place finishes.
Sophomore Kristen Gray's (West Boylston, Mass.) 328.05 points were good enough for 10th in the one-meter diving competition in addition to her 11th-place, 381.95 sum in the three-meter. Rachel Enos (Ipswich, Mass.) ended her collegiate career on a high by posting a new school record of 24.07 in the 50 free for 12th overall.
Sophomore diver Mike Wilt (Columbia, Conn.) tabbed 13th twice in the one- and three-meter diving events. Junior Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.) was named the BC men's outstanding meet perfomer for a 1:58.75 effort in the 200 backstroke and a 4:11.45 performance in the 400 IM for 24th overall.
