PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Cynthia Tow won a three-set match at first singles and the Eagles swept the three doubles matches as Boston College defeated host Providence College, 7-1, in its first competition of the 1998-99 season.
Tow, who was the USTA/New England #1 ranked player in womens open singles for the year ending December 31, 1997, won a team-high 22 singles matches in 1997-98.
Junior Barbara Privrel, sophomore Kiren Fernando, junior captain Kim Arbuckle, and freshman Ruta Veitas each gained straight-set singles victories. The Eagles suffered their lone loss at third singles, where junior Mercedes del Valle lost in two sets.
Tow and Fernando gained a victory by default in doubles play. Privrel and del Valle won a hard-fought 8-6 victory at second doubles, while Arbuckle and Veitas won 8-1 in the final doubles match.
Boston College next travels to Williamsburg, Virginia for the William & Mary Invitational on September 18-20.
