STORRS, Conn. -- Five-tenths of a second was all that separated the Boston Collge women's swimming team from catpuring its first win over the University of Connecticut in the past six years. A Huskie third place finish in the final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay was enough to lead Connecticut to a 151-149 win over the Eagles in the Nov. 10 meet. Even though the loss dropped Boston College to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST, head coach Tom Groden was extremely pleased with his teams performance. The Eagles had four school dual meet bests, including one new school record. Freshman Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, NY) swam the 100 yard backstroke in 58.73, setting a new school record.
Groden named freshman Alexis Kostopoulous (Marblehead, MA) the team's top performer. Kostopoulous won three individual events, the 100-m breaststroke (1:06.49), the 200 yard breaststroke (2:25.70) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:10.02). Both Sullivan and Kostopoulous were integral parts of the winning 400 yard medley relay, which set a new BC Dual Meet Best with a time of 3:59.33.
Freshman Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) also had a big performance for the Eagles, capturing two individual wins in the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.08) and the 100 yard butterfly (59.03).
The Eagles followed their tough loss at Connecticut with a trip to the CAN-AM Challenge in Sherbrooke, Quebec on Nov. 13-14. Their next meet is Nov. 20 against West Point. The first Boston College home meet of the year is Nov. 21, when the Eagles face Niagra and Providence. The starting time for that meet is 1:00 pm
