CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Football all-time leading rusher Mike Cloud and field hockey/softball standout Ann Marie Ambros were named "Eagles of the Year" Wednesday night at Boston College's annual All-Sports Banquet in Conte Forum. The award is regarded as the top honor bestowed on a BC student-athlete.
Cloud, who finished his BC career with 3,597 rushing yards, was a consensus first-team All-America selection this past season for the Eagles after setting a BIG EAST and BC single-season rushing record with 1,726 yards. He was a finalist for the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Year Award. He was selected in the second round of last month's National Football League draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Ambros has played in 104 career softball games, with 73 starts. She also is regarded as one of the best field hockey players ever to play at BC. She was the BIG EAST Field Hockey Rookie of the Year in 1995, and went on to become a two-time All-BIG EAST first-team selection. She was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year in 1998 and led the BIG EAST in assists in 1997 and 1998. She played in 82 career games with 79 starts.
BC's Director of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes presented the annual Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Awards, awarded to a male and female student-athlete from each academic class chosen as standouts for their leadership both on the playing field and in the classroom. Recipients of those awards included Katie Ryan (women's cross country/track) and DuJuan Daniels (football), freshman class; Cynthia Tow (women's tennis) and Justin Burdon (men's cross country/track), sophomore class; Cal Bouchard (women's basketball) and Rob Cutler (men's fencing), junior class, and Patricia Schoenhaus (women's swimming) and Sean Sinclair (men's skiing), senior class.
BC Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo presented the Athletic Director's Award for Academic Achievement to 342 of the student-athletes for maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
More than 700 student-athletes, coaches and administrators attended the annual affair.
