CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - In special halftime ceremonies of Saturday's football game vs. Miami, Boston College will retire a jersey honoring the late William J. Flynn '39, who served as the Director of Athletics at BC from 1957 until 1991.
Mr. Flynn was associated with BC athletics for nearly seven decades as a student-athlete, faculty member, coach and athletic director. During that time his loyalty, dedication, foresight and integrity were examples of the highest qualities in intercollegiate athletics. In 1985, Flynn received the Distinguished American Award, presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame to the person who over a long period of time has exhibited leadership and who has made significant contributions to the betterment of amateur football in America.
Marie Flynn, widow of the former Athletics Director, and several of the Flynn children will be on hand for the ceremony.
Between the first and second quarters of Saturday's game, BC will honor Joe Yukica, the head football coach at BC from 1968-77. Yukica finished with a 68-37-0 record that included a 9-2 season (1971).
Last week, BC retired a jersey honoring Eagle great Art Donovan (1946-49) in halftime ceremonies of the Pittsburgh game. Donovan was one of the greatest linemen ever to play at BC. His jersey now hangs alongside those honoring Louis Urban, Charles O?Rourke, Mike Holovak and Tony Thurman and the retired numbers of Eagle greats Doug Flutie (22) and Mike Ruth (68).
