Women's Tennis Wins Three Singles Flights At Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Juniors Cynthia Tow (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and Kiren Fernando (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and senior Mercedes del Valle (Mexico City, Mexico) won their respective singles flights at the Brown Invitational held in Providence, R.I. Oct. 8-10.
Tow, the tournament's top seed, advanced through the singles Flight A bracket by defeating Pille Arike of Seton Hall 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, then topping fourth seed Amy O'Donnell from the University of Virginia, 6-4, 6-1. In the finals, Tow dropped third seed Edith Pakay of Loyola Marymount, 6-3, 6-2 to take the title.
Fernando won the singles Flight B bracket by virtue of her 6-2, 6-2 win over Penka Fileva of Loyola Marymount. As flight's second seed, Fernando notched four consecutive victories to reach the final.
Del Valle took the Flight B consolation round by winning three matches en route to the finals where she beat third-seed Fleur Broughton of Harvard 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
The women's tennis team will next compete at the ECAC/ITA tournament, scheduled for Oct. 15-17 at Princeton University.
