Former national champion ('01) and 15-year veteran Brooks Orpik helped the Washington Capitals win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history; Eagles with 19 names on Cup tied for most in college hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Former Boston College Eagle and NCAA Champion (2001) Brooks Orpik helped his current franchise, the Washington Capitals, lift their first Stanley Cup trophy in franchise history after upending the upstart Las Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday, June 7. The Capitals ousted the Golden Knights, taking them five games to do so in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Finals.
With the victory, Boston College has had an Eagle etch their name onto the Stanley Cup on 19 different occasions. That figure pulls BC into a tie with Wisconsin for the most representatives of a program in college hockey history.
The Amherst, N.Y. native has now won two Stanley Cups in his professional career that has spanned 15 years (11 with Pittsburgh and four with Washington. Orpik helped the Penguins to win their third Stanley Cup trophy in franchise history, defeating the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals.
Prior to the start of his professional career, Orpik played three seasons (1998-2001) at Boston College, totaling 41 points - two goals and 39 assists - in 119 games. He helped BC win two Hockey East Tournament titles - 1998 and 2001 - and the 2001 national championship.
Orpik was the unlikely offensive hero in Game 2 as the 6-foot-3 rearguard is known primarily for his defensive prowess. Orpik scored only his 19th of his career (1,128 career games to that point), marking his first goal since February 26, 2016. It was a goal-less drought of 220 consecutive games. It also goes in the books as a game-winning goal in a Stanley Cup Final game.
The former Eagle and first-round draft pick (18th overall) is the 11th individual Eagle to be part of a squad to raise Lord Stanley.
Orpik is one of seven Eagles to win multiple Stanley Cups (full list below).
One of the most impressive figures about Orpik's accomplishment is he is now only one of 10 men to have won both an NCAA title and multiple Cups. He becomes the third Eagle to ever accomplish that feat (Brian Dumoulin and Rob Scuderi).
It should be noted that Alex Tuch, a two-year member at Boston College (2014-16) was up against Orpik as a forward with the Golden Knights.
