Apuzzo honored by the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards as the Honda Award Winner in Lacrosse.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior Sam Apuzzo was named the Honda Sport Award winner for lacrosse as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today. Apuzzo is BC's first sport winner. Last year, Kenzie Kent was one of the final four honorees for the award in lacrosse.
Â
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 42 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics".
Â
Apuzzo is now a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2018 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 25, 2018, in downtown Los Angeles.
Â
"While I am not totally surprised by this incredible achievement, I am so excited for Sam, her family and her teammates,'' said BC head coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein. "She exceeds all expectations and heightens the Boston College Women's Lacrosse program to places we've always striven to be. Her leadership and perseverance inspires her teammates, coaches and the City of Boston. She is able to dominate games, tournaments and Championships, all while remaining humble and constantly being an incredible teammate, student and friend.'''
Â
Apuzzo, who was the 2018 Tewaaraton Award honoree, led Boston College to an undefeated regular season (17-0), seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament and second consecutive NCAA Championship game appearance. The Eagles finished the season 22-2 and set a school record for wins in a season.
Â
The junior attacker was named the ACC's Attacker of the Year, All-ACC First Team, while leading BC to the undefeated regular season. She was named a IWLCA Northeast Regional First Team honoree.
A native of Babylon, N.Y., Apuzzo led the team in goals (88), assists (41), points (129), draw controls (163), caused turnovers (31) and game-winning goals (9). She was third in the nation in scoring and points scored, while leading the ACC in both categories.
Â
Apuzzo set a new program record for most goals in a single season (88), a record she set in 2017. She also set a new program record for points in a single season and tied the program record for most assists with 41. Apuzzo shattered the old record for most draw controls in a single season with 163.
Â
The three-year starter also set a single-game record for most goals in a game when she notched nine against Navy on Feb. 27. She has 273 career points, which moved her into second all-time behind Covie Stanwick '15 with 309. Apuzzo needs just eight goals to become BC's all-time leader in goals scored (196) and is third on the all-time assists list (84). She already owns the program record for most draw controls with 267.
