Apuzzo, Arsenault and Miller among the 25 nominees for lacrosse’s national player of the year award
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A trio of Boston College lacrosse players are among the 25 nominees for the 2018 Tewaaraton Award, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced today. Junior attack Sam Apuzzo, junior midfielder Dempsey Arsenault and junior defender Elizabeth Miller will now vie for the Tewaaraton Award, which is presented annually to the top male and female American collegiate lacrosse players and is considered the sport's national player of the year award.
Â
The 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held May 31, 2018, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
Â
This year, the three Boston College players nominated for the Tewaaraton Award matches the program's high for nominees in a season, tying the 2015 squad that saw then-seniors Covie Stanwick and Mikaela Rix and junior Sarah Mannelly named to the list. That season, Mannelly was voted the program's first-ever Tewaaraton Award Finalist. BC is one of three schools with three finalists this year, joining Maryland and Northwestern.
Â
Apuzzo has earned her second appearance on the Tewaaraton Award Nominee list. This season, she has posted 102 points – including 71 goals and 31 assists – in 18 games. She came into the week ranked second nationally in both points and goals. Apuzzo has also added a program-record 117 draw controls, 25 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls to the Eagles' all-around effort. This season, she is an All-ACC First Team honoree and led the ACC with four Offensive Player of the Week awards. Apuzzo is one of seven players to repeat as a Tewaaraton Nominee from 2017.
Â
Arsenault is one of the best two-way players in college lacrosse today. She is the only player in the country to average at least 2.50 ground balls per game, 4.50 draw controls a game, 1.30 caused turnovers per game and at least 4.00 points per game. On the season, Arsenault has registered 77 points from 51 goals and 26 assists – all career highs – in 18 games. Also an All-ACC First Team honoree, Arsenault earned one ACC Defensive Player of the Week Award this season.
Â
Another All-ACC First Team honoree, Miller has continued her stellar defensive play for the Eagles, who have allowed just 8.94 goals per game this season to rank in the nation's top 11 for total defense. BC has held every opponent to 12 goals or fewer and has limited opponent to single-digit goals in nine games. Defensively, Miller also anchored the BC defense that led the ACC in in ground balls (145) and caused turnovers (72) in league play as the Eagles played an aggressive defensive scheme. She has also scored a career-high five goals this season. Miller earned one ACC Defensive Player of the Week Award this season.
Â
No. 2 ranked and top-seeded Boston College (18-0, 8-0 ACC) has advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Championship where they will face either fourth-seeded Virginia or fifth-seeded Notre Dame on Friday, May 27, at 5 p.m., at Duke's Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The game will be broadcast live on NESN Plus locally and the Raycom Sports Network nationally. Outside of broadcast areas, the game can be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app. Â
