March 08, 2018 | Women's Hockey
Eagles and Buckeyes will meet for the first time on Saturday at Kelley Rink with a berth to the Frozen Four on the line.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Saturday afternoon's NCAA Quarterfinal between fourth-seeded and fourth-ranked Boston College and sixth-ranked Ohio State has a berth to the 2018 Frozen Four on the line.
Saturday's faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Kelley Rink, and the game will be streamed live nationally on ESPN3.
Tickets for the game are available for $10 for adults, and $5 for students with school ID, children over 4, seniors and groups of 10 or more. Children under 4 are free. Parking will be free of charge in Boston College's Beacon St. Garage.
Ohio State is one of the five D1 teams Boston College has never played, meaning Saturday's game is the first-ever contest between the squads.
Boston College (30-4-3) is making its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance – and eighth straight – while Ohio State (23-10-4) has earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Both teams were at-large selections to the eight-team bracket after they each fell in the semifinal round of their respective conference tournaments.
Both the Eagles and Buckeyes feature high-powered offenses while boasting two of the nation's best defenses and goaltenders.
While BC leads all teams nationally averaging 4.19 goals per game, Ohio State ranks ninth nationally with a 2.97 goals per game average.
The Eagles are led by the tandem of freshman Daryl Watts, who has 82 points in 37 games, while sophomore Caitrin Lonergan follows closely with 75 points. The duo ranks Nos. 1 and 2 nationally in points, and Watts also leads the nation in goals with 42 while Lonergan has a nation-leading 45 assists.
Ohio State has also been buoyed by young talent this season, including the freshman duo of Emma Maltais and Tatum Skaggs. Maltais' 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) is tops on the Buckeyes' squad and helped earn her WCHA Rookie of the Year, while Skaggs is close behind with 37 points from a team-high 23 goals and 14 assists.
Both teams also have a junior and a defenseman who rank third and fourth on their teams respectively: BC's junior captain Makenna Newkirk has 61 points (24 goals, 37 assists), while senior defenseman Toni Ann Miano is fourth with 43 points (18 goals, 25 assists). OSU counters with junior Maddy Field, who's 29 points (18 goals, 11 assist) ranks third, followed by redshirt-sophomore defenseman Jincy Dunne's 26 points (two goals, 24 assists).
BC has five players with at least 20 points – and 13 players with 10 or more points – while OSU counters with seven players with 20 or more points and 10 in double-digit scoring.
Defensively, BC's Katie Burt has been a four-year stalwart in goal, this season helping back the Eagles to the nation's eighth-best defense, allowing 2.00 goals per game. She's played every game this season, posting a 1.95 GAA and a .932 save percentage to go with her 30-4-3 record.
Ohio State sits close behind the Eagles in the national defensive statistics, allowing 2.05 goals per game. The Buckeyes' redshirt-junior goalie Kassidy Sauve – a 2017 All-American – has posted nine shutouts with a 1.99 GAA and a .934 save percentage with an 18-8-4 record. Sauve was the preseason WCHA Player of the Year and ultimately earned Second-Team All-WCHA honors this year.
The winner of Saturday's quarterfinal will advance to the 2018 Frozen Four in Minneapolis, Minn. The advancing team will meet the winner of the No. 1 seed Clarkson-Mercyhurst quarterfinal on Friday, March 16, at 5 p.m. ET, at Minnesota's Ridder Arena.
