Eagles Fall in Semis, Await NCAA Fate Sunday

Seventh-seeded UConn takes down top-seeded BC in Saturday's semifinal
BOSTON – UConn freshman Natalie Snodgrass scored two goals – including the game-winning tally in the second period – as the No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team fell to Connecticut in the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
While the seventh-seeded Connecticut (16-13-9) becomes the lowest seed to ever advance to the league's championship game, top-seeded Boston College (30-4-3) saw its run of four-straight championship game appearances snapped.
BC jumped on the board first as Daryl Watts put the Eagles up at 7:40 of the first period with her 42nd goal of the season, helping BC convert on its first power-play chance of the day. Caitrin Lonergan set up the goal, skating end-to-end as the Eagles reset its man-advantage, curling behind the UConn goal and setting up Watts for the top corner, near-side snipe from the near faceoff circle.
Snodgrass netted her first goal of the day at 13:07 to draw the Huskies even at 1-1, converting on the power play. Similar to Watts' goal, Snodgrass took the puck near the bottom of the circle and found space high and under the far corner to tie it up. Snodgrass added her second goal of the game less than 5:00 into the second period after UConn blocked a BC break-out attempt from their zone and kept the puck in. Snodgrass ended up with a one-on-one with BC goaltender Katie Burt, beating her with a backhand move cutting across the front.
UConn's Nora Maclaine netted her first goal of the season midway through the third period to push the Husky lead to two goals, but Makenna Newkirk drew the Eagles back within one with her effort at 12:40 of the third. However, BC could not get anything else past Belanger the rest of the period as the Eagles out-shot the Huskies 14-6 in the frame.
UConn iced the game with 40 seconds remaining after Theresa Knutson tallied the empty-net goal as Burt was off in favor of the extra skater.
Burt made 23 stops, while UConn's Annie Belanger made 29 saves as the Eagles out-shot the Huskies 13-27.
Boston College will now await a possible NCAA Tournament at-large berth, which will be announced tomorrow night, Sunday, March 4, at 9 p.m. on ncaa.com.

2018 HOCKEY EAST TOURNAMENT | Semifinals
Connecticut 4, No. 3 Boston College 2
Saturday, March 3, 2018
Boston, Mass. | Matthews Arena
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st, 7:40 | BC GOAL, 1-0 (PPG) – As Boston College re-started its first power-play chance of the day, Caitrin Lonergan picked up the puck behind Katie Burt's goal and started her spring up ice. She played a give-and-go with Toni Ann Miano at the blue line to get around a UConn defender, then skated into the Husky end. After rounding the back of the net, she threaded a pass through a pair of defenders to Daryl Watts just below the near faceoff circle. The freshman settled the puck and then found space high on the short side over UConn goaltender Annie Belanger's glove to put the Eagles up 1-0.
- 1st, 13:07 | UCONN GOAL, 1-1 (PPG) – After a Burt save on the post, UConn cycled the puck up to the blue line where Taylor Wabick and Leah Lum traded passes before Lum dropped it down to Briana Colangelo below the faceoff circle. Colangelo picked up Natalie Snodgrass cutting through the high slot and fed her just below the dot, where Snodgrass curled and put a rising wristshot in up over Burt and just inside the far upper corner of the goal to even the score.
- 2nd, 4:34 | UCONN GOAL, 1-2 – BC's defense tried to skate the puck out and bank it out off the far boards, but UConn's Kayla Mee deflected the puck to keep it in, and Catherine Crawley picked it up, curled back inside to play the loose puck, backhanding it centrally. Snodgrass skated onto it above the circle, creating a 1-on-1 with Burt as she cut across, stickhandled in front and backhanded a shot up over Burt's glove to give UConn a 2-1 lead.
- 3rd, 9:30 | UCONN GOAL, 1-3 – UConn finally cleared the puck from its own zone after an extended stretch in the end by BC. Nora Maclaine broke it out and took it deep behind the goal, eventually pushing the puck up the near point to Jamie Fox. Fox then passed it square to Emily Reid on the other point, where she put a shot on Burt. It was blocked in front and Maclaine got on the rebound, which Burt saved, but Maclaine got another try and pushed it under Burt for the two-goal Husky lead.
- 3rd, 19:20 | UCONN GOAL, 2-4 (ENG) – With Burt pulled for the extra skater, Lum forced a turnover in the neutral zone, allowing Theresa Knutson to get onto the puck in the BC end. She forced a long shot in toward goal from the half wall before a BC defender could slide in front, capping the game and earning a berth in the Hockey East championship game.
