Apuzzo, Arsenault and Miller find spots on the first team, while Eagles’ defense also recognized widely
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Seven Boston College lacrosse players were recognized by Inside Lacrosse in its Midseason All-America rankings, which were published on Thursday.
Three Eagles found themselves on the publication's Midseason All-America First Team, while four BC players – all on the defensive side of the field – stood out with honorable-mention selections.
BC leads all schools with three first-team performers and is tied for second overall among all teams with seven selections on the midseason list.
A trio of juniors – attack Sam Apuzzo, midfielder Dempsey Arsenault and defenseman Elizabeth Miller – all garnered first-team accolades in the midseason report. Apuzzo currently leads the nation in both points (76) and goals (52) and ranks seventh in assists (24). Apuzzo is a two-time ACC Offensive Player of the Week and also just won the Brine/US Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week award after her standout effort last week that included a 17-11 win over No. 5 North Carolina in which she collected nine points (four goals, five assists).
Arsenault is ranked seventh nationally in points with a career-high 52 and is 14th in goals with a career-best 35. Playing a more attack-oriented role this season after two seasons with a more defensive assignment, Arsenault has flourished in her new system.
Miller has anchored BC's defense, which is ranked seventh nationally in goals allowed per game, surrendering just 8.83 goals per contest. A second-team IWLCA All-American as a sophomore in 2017, Miller was the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on March 7 after wins over No. 11 Navy and Binghamton.
Among the Eagles' honorable mention selections are four key members of the BC defensive unit: senior captain Carly Bell, junior goaltender Lauren Daly, junior Hannah Hyatt and junior Brooke Troy. In 2018, the Eagles have lowered their goals against average by almost four full goals (3.75) since 2017 to move into the nation's top 10 defenses. They head into the weekend ranked No. 7 in team defense among all NCAA Division I teams.
The No. 2 Eagles (12-0, 3-0 ACC) return to the field on Saturday, March 31, when they travel to face No. 7 Virginia (8-2, 3-1 ACC) in Charlottesville, Va. First draw is set for 12 p.m., and the game will be available live on ACC Network Extra, which is accessible at WatchESPN.com and on the ESPN app.
