Apuzzo, Daly Grab ACC Weekly Honors
March 27, 2018 | Lacrosse
Eagles honored by conference after stand-out efforts in BC's 2-0 week.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior attack Sam Apuzzo and junior goalkeeper Lauren Daly were recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday for stand-out performances last week in the No. 2 Boston College lacrosse team's pair of wins, including a 17-11 home victory over No. 5 North Carolina.
Â
Apuzzo was honored with her second ACC Offensive Player of the Week award of the season after a 14-point week that included eight goals and six assists in wins over Yale and the Tar Heels. Daly earned her second Defensive Player of the Week nod in as many weeks on Tuesday after backing the Eagles' stout defensive effort in the victories.
Â
Last Tuesday in New Haven, Apuzzo kick-started the Eagles' come-from-behind effort, scoring three straight goals midway through the second half to pull BC even at 7-7 and ultimately put the Eagles ahead 9-7 to set up the 13-9 win. Later in the game, she set up Dempsey Arsenault's insurance goal at 11-9 that secured the BC win.
Â
Saturday, Apuzzo had a dominating effort in the Eagles' first win over the Tar Heels since 2015. After UNC came back from an early deficit and claimed the lead in Newton, Apuzzo factored on five straight goals – three goals and two assists – spanning the end of the first half and the first few minutes of the second that erased a two-goal Tar Heel lead and gave BC the lead it wouldn't surrender. Included in that run were three key draw controls after the last three BC goals of the first half, allowing the Eagles to maintain possession and ultimately re-claim the lead to take the advantage into the break. On the day, Apuzzo collected nine draw controls.
Â
Additionally, Apuzzo also earned Brine/US Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week honors on Monday for her performances last week.
Â
Daly's effort in goal helped the Eagles push their winning streak to 12 games to start the season. On Tuesday at Yale, Daly collected four saves and two ground balls in the victory. She also backed the BC defense as it held Yale scoreless for the final 12:28 of the game after the Bulldogs tied the game at 9-9. The Eagles went on to score four straight goals to take the 13-9 win.
Â
Saturday, Daly made eight saves and held the Tar Heels to its second-lowest goal total of the season (11). Included in her save total were five second-half stops as BC pulled away from the Tar Heels. Her stop on Katie Heog as UNC trailed by one at 11-10 set up the Eagles' 6-0 run to control the game and ultimately take just the program's third-ever win over North Carolina.
Â
The second-ranked Boston College lacrosse team (12-0, 3-0 ACC) returns to action on Saturday, March 31, when the Eagles travel to Charlottesville to face No. 7 Virginia (7-2, 3-1 ACC) at 12 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available at WatchESPN.com and on the ESPN app.
