In a year of many breakout performances this season, one has stood out.
In a year that has already seen so many breakout performances across the Boston College sports landscape, none may have been greater than that of Daryl Watts, who last Saturday was the first freshman in history to win the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as women's hockey's national player of the year.
Â
The 18-year-old forward from Toronto lead the country in scoring and posted the second highest single-season point total in the program's history, with 42 goals and 40 helpers. Â Â
Â
"Being mentioned in the same conversation as the women and legends who've won this award in the past – some of whom I've looked up to for years – is a lot to take in," said Watts, who became only the seventh player in NCAA history with a 40-40 season.
Â
Watts became only the second Eagles player to take home the honor, joining Alex Carpenter who captured the Patty Kazmaier Award in 2015.
Â
"We're thrilled for Daryl," noted head coach Katie Crowley. "She came to Boston College and made a significant impact on our game in just her first season. This is a historic award in that she's the first freshman to be the national player of the year, but she hasn't rested on her success at all this year."
