St. Patrick’s Day scrimmage for the Eagles Saturday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team scrimmaged for roughly 70 plays Saturday morning inside the bubble at Alumni Stadium on St. Patrick's Day. The tightly contested scrimmage finished the first week in full pads this spring for BC.
Â
"The scrimmage was great," said BC head coach Steve Addazio. "It was pretty high execution level for the first Saturday. We looked pretty good. A lot of physicality, a lot of athletes making plays. It looked like a good operation."
Â
Without the services of running back Ben Glines at the scrimmage due to a minor injury, senior John Fadule made the move to running back from quarterback. The Wellesley, Mass., native approached the coaching staff about the move and it paid immediate dividends Saturday.
Â
"He wanted to help his team and be part of something that was going to be special," said Addazio. "And he wanted to do something to help his team. He ended up at tailback and looked great doing it and made some plays out here today. It's a real sign of the mentality of this team, all for one and one for all."
Â
Addazio was satisfied with the practice week for the Eagles and the overall outcome of Saturday's scrimmage.
Â
"We wanted to have a culmination of the week's work, install, come out here and be physical, play fast, make plays and we did that," said Addazio. "Each week, you take another piece and install it on both sides of the ball and you want to see it culminate on Saturday."
Â
The Eagles resume spring practice on Tuesday inside Alumni Stadium.
Â
Â
Scrimmage notes: It is always a productive scrimmage when both sides of the ball make plays and Saturday was exactly that for both the offense and defense. The first-team offense marched down the field on the first drive of the day effectively mixing the run and the pass as sophomore running backs AJ Dillon and Travis Levy were featured. Dillon showed excellent hands as a receiver in addition to his physical presence as a ball carrier while Levy showed great vision in-between the tackles … sophomore QB EJ Perry was sharp on the first drive hitting both junior tight end Jake Burt and senior wide receiver Jeff Smith for nice gains … three Eagles finished the scrimmage with interceptions as junior cornerback Hamp Cheevers, redshirt freshman safety Ben Stewart and senior linebacker Kevin Bletzer each recored INTs … Fadule busted off a nice gain running behind the second-team offensive line … sophomore linebacker Isaiah McDuffie had a would-be sack if the quarterbacks were live during the scrimmage … redshirt freshman defensive end Drew McQuarrie batted down a pass as he rushed the passer coming off the edge … redshirt freshman cornerback Tate Haynes had a nice PBU in pass coverage while fellow redshirt freshman cornerback Brandon Sebastian had a sack.
