March 10, 2018 | Women's Hockey
Stellar third period not enough as Ohio State advances to the Frozen Four
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Boston College women's hockey team saw its 2017-18 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as sixth-ranked Ohio State earned a 2-0 win in the teams' NCAA Quarterfinal at Kelley Rink. With the win, the Buckeyes advanced to their first-ever Frozen Four next weekend in Minneapolis.
After a scoreless first period, Ohio State (24-10-4) took a 1-0 lead from Lauren Boyle's power-play goal at 10:12 of the second. After being out-shot 32-15 in the first two stanzas, Boston College (30-5-3) powered back with a 23-9 shot advantage in the third period. However, despite the pressure, the Buckeyes extended the lead to 2-0 on Maddy Field's goal with under 5:00 to play after Juliann Iafallo blocked a shot in the Buckeyes' end and sprung a 3-on-2 back into BC's end.
While keeping Ohio State pinned in its own half for much of the period, BC couldn't crack OSU goaltender and 2017 All-American Kassidy Sauve, who made 38 saves for the shutout. Boston College goaltender Katie Burt stopped 39 shots, the second-highest save total in her career.
Boston College's senior class – Burt, Kenzie Kent, Toni Ann Miano and Gabri Switaj – finished their careers as the winning class in program history, claiming a 132-14-10 overall record in four years and besting the Class of 2017 (130 wins). The Class of 2018 also had a program best .873 winning percentage, edging past last year's seniors' mark of .854.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 2nd, 9:48 | OSU GOAL, 0-1 (PPG) – After BC had just killed off all 1:23 of a 5-on-3 OSU power play, the Buckeyes stuck five seconds into the one-player advantage. Dani Sadek and Julianna Iafallo traded passed along the blue line before Iafallo dropped a pass down to Lauren Boyle just inside of the near face-off dot. Boyle lined up and one-timed a blast that found enough space inside the short-side upper corner to put OSU up 1-0 with the power-play goal.
- 3rd, 15:43 | OSU GOAL, 0-2 – Iafallo blocked a shot in the OSU end, spring a 3-on-2 break against the run of play. She fed Maddy Field in the neutral zone, and the came into the Eagles' end along the near boards, cut inside and put a hot on Katie Burt. Burt made the initial save, but lost track of the rebound and Field out-stretched around her defender to get enough wood on it to poke it past Burt before a BC defenseman could save it off the line.
