February 27, 2018 | Men's Hockey
After leading the NCAA in scoring amongst all freshmen, Logan Hutsko was tabbed the Hockey East Rookie of the Month for February
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshman forward Logan Hutsko collected his second conference award of the season after a fantastic February, earning Hockey East Rookie of the Month honors on Tuesday morning.
Â
The Tampa, Fla. native led all NCAA rookies with 13 points on seven goals and six assists in the month of February and is currently leading all first-year players in Hockey East, averaging 0.85 points per game.
Â
Hutsko has accounted for 12 goals and 17 assists this season and is tied for 86th, nationally, amongst all skaters in college hockey.
Â
On Feb. 9 against UMass Lowell, Hutsko scored the game-tying goal 1:38 into the third period and followed it up with some overtime heroics. With 6.8 seconds remaining in overtime, sophomore forward David Cotton stripped a puck down low in UMass Lowell's end, relayed it out front to Hutsko and the first-year forward ripped it top corner to walk-off the Eagles in overtime, 3-2. Hutsko's exploits marked his second game-winning goal of the season and second two-goal performance in the maroon and gold.
Â
In the following outing, the first-year phenom followed that with an incredible hat trick in the third period of the Beanpot consolation game against Harvard on Feb. 12. Hutsko's last two goals occurred in 2:34 to force overtime.
Â
He became the first Eagle to account for five goals in two games since Nathan Gerbe turned the trick 10 years ago during the 2007-08 season. Hutsko's hat trick at TD Garden included an even strength goal, power play goal and extra attacker goal. The last time an Eagle scored a natural hat trick occurred on Nov. 4, 2016 when Austin Cangelosi turned the trick at Maine.
Â
Hutsko has crafted seven multi-point performances this season, marking the most of an Eagle this season.
Â
The league's most prolific conference scorer amongst freshmen joins Hockey East Player of the Month – Adam Gaudette (Northeastern) and Hockey East Goaltender of the Month Cayden Primeau (Northeastern) as this week's monthly award winners.
Â
Tuesday's award marks Hutsko's second conference honor this season and eighth, overall, for Boston College.
