
Trio Voted Patty Kazmaier Award Top 10 Finalists

Three Eagles are among the finalists for women’s college hockey’s national player of the year award
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Three Boston College women's hockey players are among the Top 10 Finalists for the 2018 Patty Kazmaier Award, which were announced Thursday afternoon. The Eagles voted to the list include sophomore forward Caitrin Lonergan, senior defenseman Toni Ann Miano and freshman forward Daryl Watts.
The Patty Kazmaier Award is presented annually by the USA Hockey Foundation to the top Division I women's college hockey player the country.
The Top 10 list includes five forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders. Watts is the only freshman to make the list, while Lonergan is one of two sophomores. Miano is one of the six seniors named, and there is one junior recognized. Hockey East leads the way with four of the 10 finalists, while the ECAC has three, the WCHA two and CHA one. The winner of the 2018 Patty Kazmaier Award will be announced on Saturday, March 17, in conjunction with the Women's Frozen Four in Minneapolis, Minn.
All three Boston College players are first-time finalists.
Lonergan, a Roslindale, Massachusetts, product, is the nation's second-leading scorer with 70 points. She leads all players nationally in assists (41), assists per game (1.21), game-winning goals (8), and power-play assists (tied, 13), and is second nationally in power-play points (21), power-play goals (8). Lonergan is also tied for third nationally in goals (29) and goals per game (0.85) and has scored two hat tricks this season. A consistent threat, she has recorded points in 32-of-34 games and has multiple points in 21-of-34 games.
Lonergan was the Hockey East Player of the Month in December, and a two-time Hockey East Player of the Week (Nov. 6 and Dec. 4). With her stand-out season, she has already tied the Boston College sophomore points record and set the sophomore assists mark. This season in Hockey East play, she posted the fourth-highest single-season point total (49) in league history. Lonergan comes into the postseason with 103 career points, and was the third-fastest player in program history to reach the century mark.
Miano has continued the Eagles' long-standing tradition of elite defensemen. She is the leading point-getter (39 points) and goal-scorer (17 goals) among Division I defensemen and also leads that group in points per game (1.15), goals per game (0.50) and plus/minus (+45), which is also the third-best mark among all skaters nationally. Miano anchors the Eagles' defense, which is ranked ninth among Division 1 teams, and the nation's second-best power-play unit.
This season, the Bronx, New York, product, set the Hockey East career points (65) and goals (26) records for defensemen, as well as the BC record for defenseman career goals (35). Earlier this season, she earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors on Jan. 15. Entering the postseason, Miano has recorded 98 career points in 131 games, and is on the verge of becoming the third defenseman in program history to reach the 100-point plateau.
Watts has posted not only one of the best-ever seasons by a freshman in NCAA history, but also one of the best and most-balanced campaigns by any player regardless of age. At just 18 years old, she is the nation's leading scorer (79 points) and has the highest point total ever in an Olympic year during the NCAA era (since 2000). In addition to points, the Toronto, Ontario, native leads the nation in almost every offensive category, including points per game (2.32), goals (40), power-play points (22), power-play goals (9), power-play assists (13) and shorthanded points (tied, 5). She is second nationally – behind Lonergan – in assists (39) and assists per game (1.15), as well as plus/minus (+46), goals per game (1.18), shots (197) and shots per game (5.79), She is third nationally in shorthanded goals (tied, 3). Watts has recorded two hat tricks – including a four-game game – and has a nation-leading 17 points one game-winning scores (three goals, nation-high 14 assists). She has collected at least one point in 32-of-34 games, with multiple points in a nation-leading 25 games – including 11 multiple-goal games, which is also most in the country.
Watts tied the Hockey East single-season points (55) and goals (30) records originally set by Kendall Coyne in her Patty Kazmaier-winning 2015-16 season. Watts also set the Hockey East freshman points, goals and assists (25) records, as well as the Boston College freshman points, goals and assists marks. She has been recognized four times by the America Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) with national monthly player honors: Player of the Month in October and three Rookie of the Month recognitions (October, November, January). She collected those same honors from Hockey East in the same months, and has also been a two-time Hockey East Player of the Week and a seven-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week.
With three of the Top 10 finalists this season, BC has matched its highest number finalists in a year, tying the totals from the 2014-15 campaign with eventual winner Alex Carpenter '16, Emily Pfalzer '15 and Haley Skarupa '16, and the 2015-16 season with Carpenter, Megan Keller '19 and Skarupa. Carpenter is the school's only Patty Kazmaier Award winner and she was the first Hockey East player to win the award.
The third-ranked and top-seeded Boston College women's hockey team (28-3-3) begins its 2018 Hockey East Tournament quarterfinal series tomorrow against eighth-seeded Vermont at Kelley Rink. The best-of-three series will be wholly played in Chestnut Hill, with games one and two scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. If needed, the squads will wrap up the series with game three on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
