Bill Sheridan and Antoine Smith Join Coaching Staff
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College head football coach Steve Addazio announced the addition of Bill Sheridan and Antoine Smith to the Eagles' coaching staff Thursday. Sheridan joins the staff as linebackers coach while Smith will serve as the defensive tackles coach.
Â
Defensive coordinator Jim Reid transitions to coaching the defensive ends in 2018. Reid has coached the defensive line in previous college stops including Syracuse and also helped mentor Miami Dolphins' All-Pro Joey Porter to a career-high 17.5 sacks in 2008. In addition, Reid coached a pair of All-Pro defensive ends in Jason Taylor and Cameron Wake with the Dolphins.
Â
"We are thrilled to welcome Bill and Jaycine to The Heights and are very excited to bring Antoine into a full-time coaching position on the field," Addazio said. "Bill's a proven coach with a tremendous NFL and college coaching pedigree while Antoine has been a valuable contributor to our program since his arrival."
Â
Sheridan brings 13 years of NFL experience to The Heights, including serving as the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012-13 and the New York Giants in 2009. Sheridan was part of the Giants' championship run in Super Bowl XLII when they defeated New England, 17-14.
Â
Sheridan's presence in Tampa Bay was felt immediately as he helped the Buccaneers' run defense go from last to first in the NFL as the defense went from holding opponents to 156.1 yards per game to 82.5 per game. The Bucs also led the League in opponent negative plays and tackles for loss in 2012. In 2013, Sheridan's defense finished tied for third in total takeaways with 31 (10 FF, 21 INT).
Â
Sheridan's coaching career began in 1981 at Shrine (Mich.) High School in Royal Oak where he worked for four seasons as an assistant coach. After completing a graduate assistant position at Michigan from 1985-86, he went on to hold assistant coaching positions at Maine (1987-88), Cincinnati (1989-91), Army (1992-97), Michigan State (1998-2000), Notre Dame (2001) and Michigan (2002-04).
Â
Sheridan is a native of Detroit, Mich. He and his wife, Jaycine, have four children: Joe, Nick, Mark and Natalie.
Â
Smith arrived in Chestnut Hill prior to the 2017 season as the Director of Football Initiatives. Prior to Boston College, Smith was the defensive line coach at Texas State in 2016.
Â
Smith came to Texas State after serving the last two seasons as the defensive line coach at James Madison, where he produced a trio of All-Colonial Athletic Association defensive linemen.
Â
He went to James Madison after serving three seasons as the defensive line coach at Holy Cross, where he produced three All-Patriot League players. He joined the Crusaders after coaching the defensive line at Miami (Ohio), Youngstown State, Lafayette, Maine and Minot State. He also was the strength and conditioning coach at North Dakota.
Smith joined the coaching staff at Holy Cross after helping lead Miami (Ohio) to the Mid-American Conference championship and a victory in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in 2010. He also coached All-MAC Second-Team defensive tackle Austin Brown in 2010.
Smith earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and kinesiology at Maine in 2001, where he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter as a defensive tackle. He also received a master's degree in health and human performance at Minot State in 2004.
