Burt Backstops Another Beanpot
February 14, 2018 | Women's Hockey, #ForBoston Files
Senior goalie stops 35 shots to help Eagles capture third straight title
In a game where the Boston College women's hockey team was forced to battle back to force overtime, the local stalwart from Lynn was there the whole way to ensure the opportunity.
Despite allowing three goals to Boston University in the second period of the 2018 Beanpot Championship, BC senior goalie Katie Burt stood on her head in her final 'Pot appearance, making 35 saves on the night to help keep hope alive for a third-straight tournament title before Toni Ann Miano made it a reality in overtime.Â
"It's really nice to win a championship on home ice. We're going to enjoy this one for a night, then we've got Maine on, what, Friday," inquired Burt, who was named the Bertagna Award winner as the tournament's top goaltender for the second time in her career, the first in 2016.Â
"We want the Beanpot, all the other awards are just add-ons," she noted.Â
Burt, who continues to add her name to the NCAA record books this season, was quick flashing the leather of the glove on numerous occasions and sprawling down to stuff a Terrier rush with her pads just the same, coming up with 10 stops in the first period, and eight in overtime.Â
She was able to put both of those pads to good use in making two massive stops on BU's Victoria Bach - whose 35 goals are second most in the country behind BC freshman Daryl Watts (39) - who skated in unabated twice before having her plans ruined by Burt.Â
"She went left first, then her second breakaway she went right," said the Eagles goalie, who finished her Beanpot career with a 7-1 record and 1.45 goals against average. "I didn't anticipate her going the same way twice. I'm trained for this, I'm ready for this, I'm just going to let myself take over, try not think about it. Once you start thinking about it, pucks go in. I wasn't really thinking about it that much, just going with the flow."Â
That was much the story of the tournament for Burt, who made 36 saves in the team's semifinal victory over Northeastern.Â
It's just the continuation of what she has been doing since she arrived at The Heights, knowing full well as a Massachusetts native the significance of skating a lap with the Beanpot trophy hoisted overhead.Â
"It's such a special tournament for our team and all our players, especially our players from Mass," stated tournament MVP Watts, a Toronto native well-versed by the likes of Burt on the importance of the Beanpot in local hockey lore. "It's just such a fun tournament to win."Â
In closing the books on her Beanpot career, Burt will stand as one of the best goaltenders to play in the showdown of Boston's best hockey teams, capturing three straight titles.
Â
While each tournament title tastes sweet, for the Lynn native, maybe none more so than this final one.Â
"They're all pretty special when you win a championship and get to keep that trophy for the year."
"Winning the Beanpot at home is probably the best one," Burt concluded. "It's awesome to beat BU. Anytime we beat BU for a championship, it's even better."
